Ration Books last issue 1953/54 WW2

Handed in but will be sent to the "Hancock" museum Newcastle as not local. Just for folks who have never seen one. Meat, Fats, Cheese and Sugar still on ration but not for long thank goodness. However kids at school recieved codliver oil and malt all from a shared spoon, a bottle of milk and lunch.

Marhall's date stone Station Road.

M & A Marshall 1837 date stone on the gable end of the building on Station Road Horsforth next to the Optician. Allthough Marhalls have been in Horsforth for years I can not find anyone to fit these intials around that date, think it may be Mathew. Go and take a look before it weathers away.

Horsforth Cemetery Chapel now unused.

Leeds City Council kindly gave acces to view the inside of the chapel at Horsforth Cemetery. A group of us felt sure there would be some memorial plaques for WW1 and WW2 which we wanted to photograph and maybe retreave in time. Very dissapointing no paques, no cross nothing on the walls at all. Lovely old building begging to be used.

Flooding and Birdstrike issue in Moseley Valley/Bramhope Tunnel Horsforth entrance.

Here are some reasons why the housing development on Moseley Bottoms should not be permited. This is the Horsforth entrance to Bramhope Tunnel as it is known, not sure why as it starts in Horsforth and finishes in Arthington but most of the navies lived in a make shift camp on Moor Road Bramhope and the school in the village had to be extended to accomodate the all the children. The bridge the train is passing under is Bay Horse Bridge below Mosley Farm named so because a beer house existed at Dean Grange Farm to keep the workers out of Horsforth.

Air Raid Siren from Mills buzzers and hooters.

There where many mills in Horsforth and surrounding districts, each one had a siren, hooter or buzzer distinctive to that mill alone. In peace time sounded maybe ten minutes before the next shift started and reminded folk to get a move on or the gates would be locked. In war time put to a different use.

Robert Craven 1580 date stone at Troy Horsforth

In the picture of Troy mill there is a little house by the pond. That house was demolished in the 1920s to make way for traffic. It had a datestone over the door which some thoughtfull stonemason used in the wall and it is there for us to see today. It reads RC for Robert Craven 1580. Just to the left of the bus stop on Troy Rd.

Yorkshire Penny Bank Svings Box 1927

How many of you had one of these, given to children at school when you wanted the money out you took it to the bank and they counted it and deposited the ammount into an account for you. This one is special because it has a key maybe someone made for it but you never saw a key, it was all secret.
